EAST LONDON FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

picture of myself, the photographer behind Rocking Horse Photography

Hello! I’m Sara, an experienced family photographer, trusted by hundreds of London families, to photograph them as they grow and change, whether outdoors, in my purpose-built studio or at your home.

The truth is, we rarely have decent family photos with all of us in the frame. At best, there’s an arm reaching out, to take that selfie, at worst we’re not looking at the phone, and let’s be honest, phone lenses are not the most flattering or the best quality.

That’s where I come in. I have a purpose-built family photography studio in East London; I also regularly shoot outdoors, usually in Victoria Park (though also other London locations), and of course, I can also document your family at home. My extensive training and experience mean that I’m comfortable shooting in natural sunlight (and the challenges that can present) as well as artificial studio lighting, so that the light frames your faces and flatters figures beautifully. And if you’ve ever had a shoot with me before, you’ll know I’m pedantic about the details, which means when you look at your final family photos, you won’t get distracted by stray straps or loose hairs, but rather all of your focus will be on the faces you love and adore.

PS. Remember that family sessions are wonderful to invite the extended family to as well.

Outdoors family photography

I do most of my outdoors sessions in Victoria Park, East London. These sessions are ideal for active children who like to run around. This beautiful park has a wide variety of landscapes and backdrops to explore - perfect for them, and for variety in the backgrounds of your photos.

I know the park very well and so plan our photoshoot route, based on your children’s ages and personalities, the season, weather and time of day, so we get the most flattering light and locations for your family portraits.

I also travel to other locations in and around London for outdoors family shoots. Russia Dock Woodland in Rotherhithe is very popular with my Southwark, Bermondsey and Wapping families.

London landmark photoshoots are also very popular with families who are leaving London, or those on vacation.

If you would like an outdoors family photoshoot at a London location of your choice, please get in touch.

“We decided on an outdoors photoshoot in autumn (one of my favourite seasons) and from start to finish we had a wonderful experience with Sara. Right from the start I felt that she was very down to earth and easy to talk to, not to forget, she goes above and beyond at all times.

Pre-photoshoot she gave us lots of guidance regarding clothing colours and what to take into consideration if we wanted to hang some photos up on our walls. She also asked questions about the kids and their personalities so she could get to know them beforehand.

On the day of the photoshoot she made us all feel at ease and my kids warmed up to her straight away! My eldest (6 years) has a very playful nature and my youngest (1.5 years) is a bit more clingy. She was very patient, attentive and warm and she managed to work her magic.

A few weeks later we went to her studio to view the photos and we were stunned by what she managed to capture. She helped us thoroughly to choose our favourites and we now have some amazing memories captured.

I would highly recommend Sara in a heartbeat, she is truly wonderful and hope to do some more shoots with her in the future!”

Studio family photography

Studio photography is perfect for capturing family groupings and individual portraits in a controlled environment so we can focus on getting natural looking images using your choice of backdrop and simple, timeless props.

This uncluttered look and feel means that you can beautifully display a selection of your images in one frame - and everything sits together comfortably, without any colour or stylistic clashes.

In fact, this is exactly what most of my families choose to do - either picking a few separate wall-art pieces that are designed to be hung together on a wall at home, or picking one larger frame with multiple images within it.

“We really enjoyed our photo shoot with Sara at her studio - she made us all at ease and had some great props we could use (she even went out of her way to find a few extra ones to match our theme). We've had a couple of professional shoots in the past and, by far, our experience with Sara was our favourite. She's a very talented photographer, knows how to capture babies really well and was super patient with our requests. We were really happy with how the photos turned out and we couldn't have asked for better shots. We'd highly recommend and we'll certainly be asking Sara back to capture our family again...”

At-home, family lifestyle shoot

If you’re all about the real-life moments, and day-today-activities, in familiar settings, then a lifestyle photography session at home is for you.

Before your session, we talk about what makes you all tick and what you like doing together at home. We’ll even chat about suitable spaces at home to display your photos, and how to prep your home for a photoshoot.

Lifestyle photoshoots typically range from one hour to half a day long. We capture a mix of spontaneous and lightly directed portraits in your favourite spots - whether the living room, bedroom, nursery, kitchen or even on the stairs. For longer sessions we might even focus on those special moments like bath-time giggles, baking adventures, or story-time cuddles. It's all about capturing your family exactly as you are!

“Sara was very professional and directed me and my son so well during our home shoot. The end product was beautiful, I would highly recommend!”

family photography - your questions answered

  • The whole family whether that is your nuclear family or the wider gang. Perhaps you’re celebrating a big anniversary, a milestone birthday or a family reunion. Make the most of having the whole family together, and capture portraits with the extended family. These make wonderful grandparent presents.

Regardless, during your shoot, we will create a range of portraits, some individual ones, some with each parent, the full family etc. We discuss what you’re after as part of the booking process.

  • Key baby stages for studio photography are around four months when baby is comfortable doing tummy time and can support their own head, around 6 months when they are sitting unsupported (but before they are crawling), once they are crawling and then around their first birthday when we can also do a birthday themed cakesmash shoot.

Family shoots with older children and extended families also work well. In fact, I’ve had quite a few much older children, organise portrait sessions with their siblings as a surprise for their parents for anniversaries and special birthdays.

Outdoors shoots are wonderful for children who like to run free and wild. Babies often try to pick up twigs and leaves etc off the ground and eat them; and so, many families prefer to keep baby shoots in the studio until they are running around.

  • Outdoors sessions take place throughout the year, except for when the weather is extremely wet!

Each season brings its own beauty. Autumn and winter offer stunning reds, browns and yellows, spring brings fresh cherry blossoms and greens, and summer provides lush greens and beautiful setting sun light in the early evenings and late afternoons.

Autumn session and summer evening sessions in particular, book well in advance, so early booking is strongly recommended. Each year I release a limited number of autumn weekend session dates. In the summer I have limited after-school appointments.

If you would like to hear about these dates before their public release, please join my mailing list here.

  • Before your session, we discuss colour schemes and clothing and I will share tips when picking out your clothes. In short; keep clothing colours coordinated (one main colour plus one or two accent colours), styles simple and timeless, without writing, logos or characters.

Families usually send me pictures of various options before the session, and I help with deciding on outfits.

  • My style is to lightly direct shoots, giving helpful advice on things like where to place your hands and feet etc and which way to turn for the most flattering, natural light (when outdoors), so that you feel confident in what I capture being well-composed yet still a naturally comfortable-looking portrait. In the studio I carefully finesse my lighting, so that the lighting pattern I pick, emphasises your most beautiful features and flatters you perfectly.

At home lifestyle sessions tend to be slightly less directed, and more in the moment, although I do still give some tips and take account of the natural light available in your home.

  • The standard 45 min session is usually long enough to capture a gallery of around 20 different portraits with families or around 3-4 people, though sessions can be extended for larger groups. For sessions with young babies, I would recommend sessions of no longer than 60 minutes.

  • We meet again, about two weeks after your shoot, to go through your edited images. When we meet we decide on which package of (digital) images and printed items you would like. There are a few packages available. See below for more details.

Before coming back to this appointment, I recommend sending me photos of walls and rooms you’re thinking of hanging pictures up on, so I can take this into consideration when preparing your images for your viewing.

  • I offer mini sessions in the studio and outdoors at Christmas. These sessions book out well in advance, so early booking is strongly recommended. If you would like to receive advance notice of the session dates prior to their public release, please join my mailing list for details.
