PREPARING FOR YOUR NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION:
Your newborn photographer’s top tips - refined with years’ of experience…

Congratulations on your new baby and your decision to capture these fleeting first moments. As you look through my portfolio, you won't be able to help but notice the theme of sleeping babies. In fact, many of newborn portrait poses require sleep and so this peaceful state of sleepiness is the ultimate goal of our newborn session. To help achieve this, please read on for on my best tips on sleep (refined over years of experience handling new babies) and other prep for your session.

We’ll go through these tips on the phone too, when I can answer any questions and go through more detail.

At-home prep, in the days before your shoot

Nappies and wipes

Milk

Parent & sibling outfits

Baby going home outfit

Dummy (optional but helpful)

Baby blankets & muslins

Anything to make you and older siblings comfortable (books, nursing pillow, ipad, toys)

Hot & cold drinks, plus snacks are provided but do bring something more substantial for lunch!

What happens during your photoshoot

  • As baby will be undressed for much of the session I make the studio rather warm (around 28° Celsius) so that they are kept nice and comfortable throughout the session.

  • As the only way to achieve those typical curled-up newborn poses is with a baby who is sound asleep; during the session we try to settle your baby into a deep sleep by rocking and 'shussssshing' as well as giving more frequent or longer feeds than you may be used to so far. If you are using, or considering using a dummy, please do bring it along, or let me know if you would like to try one, as I usually have spares. These can be a huge lifesaver as sometimes babies want to suckle continuously for comfort even when they are already full.

  • Please know that I do not mind waiting for you to nurse, change your baby's nappy, or just take a break to soothe your baby at any point. You and your baby's well-being is more important to me than getting a shot.

If you are bottle feeding your baby, please bring along more than you think you'll need as we will likely feed more than every 3-4 hours.

  • When doing the poses where baby is undressed, it is normal (and okay!) for baby to poo or wee on my backdrop or anywhere else. I can assure you this happens all the time and I am not upset or offended. Please bring with you baby wipes, extra nappies and a towel. An extra set of clothes for the parents is also a good idea. Someone always gets wee'd or pooped on, it's usually me, but sometimes you!

Please note that after each newborn session I launder all my backdrops and items the baby comes in contact with.

  • I have a variety of props for you to choose from in the studio. If you have something of sentimental value which you would like to include, please do let me know as I would love to incorporate this in one of the portraits too.

It's a good idea to think about where at home you might want to display a newborn or family photo from your session, so that we can keep the decor of the room in mind when picking the colour schemes.

We will pick colours and props before you arrive, so everything is set up on your arrival, ready to start.

  • I take a range of posed shots with baby in/on props & blankets, as well as some portraits with the family and some close ups of hands, feet, eyelashes etc. Modest skin to skin images are also a popular and timeless choice, especially for daddy and baby. If there are other specific shots you would like, please feel free to show me. With close up pictures, mum and/or dad’s hands & nails will also end up in shots, so neat and clean nails can make all the difference! If you are wearing nail varnish, please do check in case it has chipped. If you would prefer not to have your hands and nails in the shots, please just let me know.

After your shoot - receiving your photos

Editing a selection of the best images from our session will take me approximately 10 working days after which we meet again in the studio for your gallery viewing and ordering appointment. We will schedule your this appointment during the session, according to our mutual availability. At the gallery viewing and ordering appointment you can pick your favourite images and place an order for your chosen package of images.

Once you have selected images for printing, and payment has been received, I will do final checks on the files before sending to the printer / making them available for digital download. Lead times on printed items depend on the specific item(s) you order but most items take 10-14 working days to produce from order confirmation and 1-3 days to deliver. The printers I work with are all renowned within the photography, print & gallery industries for the exceptional quality of their products.

  • If you are breastfeeding, it can help to avoid spicy, acidic or gassy foods (such as broccoli, kale, curry or onions) as well as large amounts of dairy and caffeine for approximately 48 hours before our session, as these can make baby unsettled.

  • Many babies at this age have dry skin. If your baby does, please avoid putting creams or oils on baby’s skin before the shoot, as these can leave a greasy film which does not photograph well. I have a product called Aquaphor in the studio, which is designed for baby’s skin and does not leave a greasy film. You are very welcome to use this. I can happily also reduce the appearance of any flaky dry skin, or milk spots, when I edit the photos.

  • If you wish to have a portrait with your baby, keep the clothing simple. For family photos, neutral coloured clothes or dark clothes always photograph well, though kindly avoid logos, writing, characters and lots of patterns. If you are keen on black and white images, please avoid white and red tops, if possible. As it is always very warm in the studio for newborn sessions, I do recommend that you dress in light layers than can be removed.

I'm a big fan of skin on skin portraits, with you holding your baby against you.  They're so timeless! If this is something that you would like, I recommend wearing a strapless top or vest. Alternatively, I can wrap you in a scarf or other stretchy material I have available at my studio. This can make for some very tender images.

You won't need any specific outfit for the baby, as I will be photographing baby predominantly naked or wrapped, since everyday newborn clothing can tend to swamp babies and look bulky in photos. Newborns really do tend to look best photographed in very little.

  • Please let me know ahead of the session if there are any siblings you would like to include in the photos. I tend to take sibling shots either right at the beginning or very end of our session (depending on nap times etc.), so that the siblings are then free to play elsewhere during the rest of the shoot. In terms of their clothing, plain muted colours, without patterns, logos or characters work best for boys' clothing, and jeans are always a timeless choice for trousers. For girls I recommend muted colours, or pretty dresses. Light patterns are fine, as long as no one else in the family has a patterned item on. Texture works well – so laces, frills and knits work are ok. Siblings will be barefoot in photos, so you don’t need to worry about shoes, socks or tights.

*Please do check siblings’ faces before photos for any eye gunk, food smears, or snotty noses. Likewise if they've been running around barefoot, it is wise to give them a quick clean.

*I do have a small selection of toys in the studio, but please also bring some toys / entertainment (e.g, a tablet) to keep older siblings entertained for longer, if they are staying for the duration of session. There is free Wi-Fi available.

  • Please be sure to bring with you plenty of nappies (7-8), because we tend to spend a lot of time feeding baby and they might need more nappy changes than expected. If you are bottle feeding, please bring along more milk than you think you will need. In addition, please bring the usual items you would have in your change bag – a spare change of clothes for baby, a blanket, a muslin or two, wipes, nappy bags etc. I have some of these items available for you to use too, but you may prefer to have your own favourite brands and products. It is always a good idea to also bring a set of spare clothes for yourself in case of poop or wee explosions. (Usually it is me who gets weed or pooped on, but just in case it is you!) Perhaps also consider bringing a book or iPad etc. for yourself during the shoot so you can relax during the session too.

The morning of your shoot, before leaving home

Don’t let the baby doze / cat nap during the morning (before you set off) as this will reduce the chances of a achieving the deep sleep we need, in the session. Please do tire baby out and prolong awake time before the session with things like a bath and massage before you set off. This can really help encourage a deeper sleep, when it comes. Dress baby in just a nappy and then wrap in blankets and a hat as required by the weather conditions. This way, if baby falls asleep on the way to the studio, we can start the session immediately making use of the deep travel motion induced sleep.

Immediately before you leave the house (so your bags are packed, you're ready, sibling(s) ready, shoes on etc.) do a MASSIVE feed and burping as the absolute last things you do. Then once your baby is in the pram / car seat, as they are likely to fall asleep on the journey, I will start the session very soon after you arrive to make the most of this deep sleep.
